Wright said the office has seen improved retention after a recent pay increase and that staffing levels have improved. “We are fully staffed at the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office,” he said, asking the community to continue supporting deputies and to pray for reductions in violent crime. He noted deputies are being prepared for field assignments and basic academy attendance where required.
The sheriff also acknowledged recent violent incidents in Windsor and elsewhere as part of the county’s rationale for remaining vigilant. Commissioners thanked him for the update and for the department’s recruitment and retention efforts; no formal action was required or taken at this portion of the meeting.
