Sanford IT outlines data, infrastructure and a cautious plan for AI pilots

Bob Keegan, the city's IT Manager, outlined an inventory of core services and infrastructure and described a multi-phase approach to modernization and the cautious adoption of AI.
Keegan said IT manages roughly 20 core services divided into six groups and outlined infrastructure metrics including about 47 miles of fiber connecting 21 sites, roughly 40 terabytes of daily network traffic ("the equivalent of 8,000 Netflix streaming movies" in Keegan's analogy), 60 virtual servers, and about 45 terabytes of active storage. He said the city's email platform handles approximately 3,000,000 emails annually and its phone systems handle hundreds of thousands of calls a year.
On AI and automation, Keegan said the city is in a foundation phase setting up an AI governance committee with participation from legal, HR and IT. "With AI, you have to be careful. If you make mistakes with AI, they're lightning fast," he said, and described plans to run two to three low-risk pilots after governance rules and data strategy are established. Keegan also described a data strategy to reduce duplicate data and create a single data storage area for migration and compliance.
Commissioners asked about modernization costs and replacement of older enterprise systems (the AS/400 was mentioned); Keegan said the work is a heavy lift and will proceed in phases while protecting security and compliance.
