Board updates ATV/UTV routes in county code to improve local access

The St. Croix County Board approved an ordinance amending chapter 79 of the county code to update all‑terrain and utility vehicle (ATV/UTV) routes on certain county highways. Vice Chair Ben Van Summerin moved the ordinance and Highway Commissioner Ravi Cretci described the department’s annual review process for route applications submitted by local municipalities.
Cretci said routes were considered where local support exists and where traffic volumes and road characteristics make the route compatible; he noted a rule of thumb that roads with average daily traffic above roughly 800–1,000 vehicles begin to pose safety concerns for opening them to ATV/UTV use. The ordinance passed unanimously, 19–0, and includes several new connections intended to provide access for residents in areas with limited local services.
