Commissioners approve architect RFQ pick for Fire/EMS stations; fire commission seeks higher per‑station support

The Bertie County Board of Commissioners voted to proceed with a qualifications‑based selection (RFQ) of the Wootton Group to provide professional architectural services for county Fire/EMS stations using grant funds.
A county staff member who served on the review committee said the Mini‑Brooks Act (state law) requires a qualifications‑based procurement for these services and that the Wootton Group was judged to be most closely aligned with the county's needs. "Based on the RFQs, they were the most reasonable, in my opinion," the presenter said. Commissioners asked that staff and the chosen firm engage fire chiefs and confirm scope and pricing prior to final contract execution.
Separately, Kenneth Perry, representing the fire commission, proposed raising the annual allocation to each county fire department from $30,000 to $35,000 (to be funded from the fire tax fund), and suggested consolidating certain line items so that fire tax revenue would cover department allocations. Commissioners did not immediately adopt the funding change but directed staff to review the proposal and legal/operational issues and to return with recommendations.
