Board honors longtime residents, celebrates local programs and community events

At its Nov. 7 meeting the Surry County Board of Supervisors presented resolutions recognizing Melvin H. Blizzard and Vivian F. Thomas on milestone birthdays, commended the Luther Porter Jackson Junior Lady Cougars for a 12‑0 district season, and highlighted recent community events and a county tourism video that increased social‑media traffic.
The Surry County Board of Supervisors used its Nov. 7 meeting to recognize longtime residents and local achievements and to highlight community events.
The board presented a resolution to Melvin H. Blizzard recognizing his 90th birthday and listing his family, church affiliations, employment history and civic contributions. A second resolution honored Vivian F. Thomas for her life and community contributions; both resolutions were adopted and will be entered into county records.
The board also recognized the Luther Porter Jackson Junior Lady Cougars for finishing the season undefeated (12‑0) and named head coach William Johns as coach of the year. Players were individually recognized from the team roster and presented with a resolution commending their achievements.
County Administrator Melissa D. Rollins introduced a short county tourism video that aired on local television and was credited with increasing visits to the county’s tourism Facebook pages; staff said the video will be shared in the Richmond and Hampton Roads markets. Rollins also summarized recent community events including the Surry Marketplace grand opening, homecoming parade, National First Responders Day, upcoming Veterans Day dinner and tree‑lighting ceremony.
