New Surry County schools superintendent highlights accreditation, graduation and career programs

The Surry County Board of Supervisors formally introduced the district’s new superintendent Nov. 7, and he used the opportunity to outline recent academic accomplishments and program highlights.
The superintendent identified himself and described the school division as fully accredited, noting a recent Virginia Department of Education exemplar achievement award for the high school. He said the high school’s chronic absenteeism rate is 8% and the middle school’s is 4%, and reported a 96% graduation rate. He emphasized the district’s work to close achievement gaps across racial and special‑education groups and highlighted extensive dual‑enrollment opportunities, career and technical education (culinary, agriculture, photography, business, technology, energy and power, JROTC, cybersecurity) and paid internships with Dominion Power.
The superintendent said 704 students are enrolled in the division with 84 homeschooling and 34 religious exemptions, and expressed a goal that graduates be “enrolled, enlisted, or employed.” He invited the board to host students at future meetings to share their experiences and said he would like to return monthly.
