Highlander Fire Board seeks levy increase; commissioners decline to act

At the March 18 meeting, Michael Bloom, vice president of the Highlander Fire Board, told commissioners the district is eligible to apply for a maximum levy increase because of population growth and that the district currently does not use nearly all of its levy capacity. "We do not use the entirety of the tax levy we currently receive, close to 50%," Bloom said, explaining the request was to preserve the option if the district needs it.
Commissioners Frank Loop and Jason Sharp both said they were not inclined to approve another tax increase for a municipal agency at this time; no formal motion was made to approve the levy increase application.
