Operators say aging Coliseum drove design choices for new Macon arena: ice, HVAC and concessions were key problems

Project operators and the owner's representative described multiple operational shortcomings in the current Coliseum that motivated the new arena design. David Aiello of Oak View Group said the building's age and systems limit how staff and operators serve events, especially where ice and humidity control are concerned.
Aiello described the ice plant and moisture-control tradeoffs: "We currently have to make sure the right air handler units are throwing hot air at the building while the next one's throwing cold air, so it dehumidifies the whole arena. I mean, nobody thinks about that stuff, but it's not the most efficient." The team said modern dehumidification, better HVAC and dedicated systems will reduce operational complexity and costs.
Concessions and circulation were another focal point. Project staff said the Coliseum currently has too few points of sale for the crowds it hosts, producing long lines and lost revenue. The new design targets roughly one point of sale per 100 patrons and market-style concessions to remove queue bottlenecks and speed service. MFA's team also pointed to wider concourses, improved sightlines and more efficient loading areas as critical to keeping events, teams and promoters returning to Macon.
Speakers emphasized that addressing these technical and service shortcomings was essential to retain high-demand events and to compete with nearby cities for conventions and sporting tournaments.
