Vernonia School Board to appoint director Sept. 12 after interviewing five candidates

The Vernonia School District Board of Directors interviewed five applicants for the vacant Director Position #7 during a workshop on Aug. 29, 2024 and announced it will select and appoint a replacement at the board’s Sept. 12 regular meeting.
Board Chair Susan Wagner called the workshop to order at 7:00 p.m. and the minutes list applicants Janice Cockrell, Lisa Curry, Colton DeWitt, Tony Holmes and Alicia Mahoney as having submitted materials and introduced themselves during the meeting. The minutes state the original term for Position #7 expires June 30, 2027; the person appointed at Sept. 12 will serve until June 30, 2025 and would need to run in the May 2025 election to serve the remaining two years.
Superintendent Jim Helmen thanked the applicants and emphasized expectations for the role, saying, "The District has an unbelievable board of directors, focused on giving every student a chance," and that appointees are exposed to technical information and public scrutiny. The board asked applicants to attend the Sept. 12 meeting because the appointee will be given the oath of office and seated as an active board member for the remainder of that meeting.
No formal motion or vote to appoint was recorded in the Aug. 29 workshop minutes; the appointment is scheduled to occur at the Sept. 12 regular meeting per the published minutes.
