Superintendent Jim Helmen presented the Vernonia School District's Continuous Improvement Plan (CIP) and highlighted priorities for the coming year, including career and technical education (CTE), social-emotional learning (SEL), and a new "Portrait of a Professional" to guide hiring and staff development. "The work during year one consisted of looking at data and deciding where we as a District want to be," Helmen told the board, and he described the CIP as a "living document" with collective buy-in.
Helmen singled out improving 9th-grade on-track rates as a key lever to boost graduation rates: the high school was at 62% on-track and the district hopes to reach 67% by the end of the school year. Board members asked how students are selected for CTE courses and requested better counselor access during registration; Principal Nate Underwood offered to investigate selection procedures and report back.
