John Newman was appointed chair of the Cumberland County Board of Supervisors at the board’s Jan. 13 meeting after nominations opened and no additional nominations were offered. A motion to appoint a vice chair (Tyree) was also moved and seconded.
Speaker 6 formally nominated Newman, saying, “I would like to nominate John Newman.” The board then moved and completed the organizational appointments. Speaker 3 told the public the county has several volunteer openings, including a District 5 vacancy on the planning commission, a non-board member spot at Piedmont Senior Resources, an at-large seat on the economic development authority and a vacancy on the Crossroads Community Services Board, and a newly open board of zoning appeals seat. “You can go to the county website and download…volunteer forms and submit that back to county administration,” the speaker said.
The board also recognized Courtney Brown as its January 2026 employee of the month. Speaker 3 praised Brown’s customer service and professionalism: “She always has a smile on her face…she represents that office very well.” The board moved through other routine organizational items after the appointments.
