Superintendent Jim Helmen reported to the Vernonia School District Board of Directors that the district’s Integrated Guidance submission to the Oregon Department of Education shows the district is making "adequate progress" toward state student-growth metrics. He stressed the difficulty of the recovery, saying that "after COVID students on average were 2-3 years behind" and that state proficiency assessments remain rigorous.
Helmen described the quarterly reporting process required by the Oregon Department of Education and explained that the district’s Integrated Guidance narrative details how Student Investment Account (SIA) and High School Success Account (HSSA) funds are being used to support growth. He urged families to support reading and comprehension at home to help accelerate gains in early grades, noting it is not uncommon for a fluent K–2 reader to struggle to meet higher third-grade standards.
Board members asked clarifying questions about growth percentages and interventions. The report was provided to the board in advance; board members were invited to follow up with the superintendent for additional detail. The district will continue quarterly submissions and tracking under ODE guidance.
