Planning commission reviews tiny-home draft, discusses PUDs, materials and services

At the Feb. 2 Allendale Charter Township Planning Commission meeting, staff presented a draft text amendment addressing tiny homes and the commissioners discussed how to regulate them.
Greg Ransford said he had "drafted language based on direction of Planning Commission," and commissioners debated whether tiny-home communities should be treated differently from a single tiny home placed on a private property. The discussion covered using shipping containers as building materials, possible review through planned-unit developments or special-use procedures, the number of tiny homes allowed on a parcel, minimum and maximum acreage, basements, park amenities, and how water and sewer hook-ups would be handled.
Commissioner Ray Nadda volunteered to contact a local builder to gauge interest in working with the Commission on tiny-home communities, a step commissioners supported as part of next-phase stakeholder outreach. No formal motion or vote was taken on the draft; the item remains under discussion and will return to a future meeting for further direction.
