Taos County approves MOUs with local school districts to use schools as emergency evacuation centers

The board approved memoranda of understanding with Cuesta Independent Schools and Taos Municipal Schools to designate school facilities as evacuation centers during emergencies; OEM staff said additional MOUs are pending with Mesa Vista and Penasco.
Marc Ortega, the county OEM coordinator, presented two memoranda of understanding that would allow the county to use designated school facilities as evacuation and sheltering centers during emergencies. He told commissioners that Cuesta and Taos Municipal Schools have approved the agreements locally and that the county is already working on additional MOUs with Mesa Vista and Penasco.
Commissioners moved and approved both MOUs by roll call. Ortega said the MOUs will be incorporated into the county's emergency operations plan and that exercises are planned to familiarize school and county staff with sheltering procedures.
