Commissioner Harvey praises multi‑agency response after south‑county fire

Commissioner Jim Harvey said the south‑county fire nearly reached a residential area and highlighted the scope of the response, thanking local fire districts, neighboring counties and Hill Air Force Base.
"There were literally a couple 100 people there trying to save those structures," Harvey said, describing brush trucks navigating difficult terrain and returning a potentially catastrophic incident to a limited loss.
Harvey said the Department of Veterans Affairs had earlier cleared brush in the area, creating a buffer that likely reduced the fire's damage. He also noted one house occupant was rescued by a sheriff's deputy and praised mutual aid from agencies including Weber Fire District, Morgan County, Tooele County and Davis County.
Commissioners used the comment period to urge residents in mountainous parts of the county to be proactive about wildfire defensible space. Chair Gates Frower echoed the thanks and described the effort as turning "a possible disaster into less than that." The remarks were delivered during the commissioners' opening comments and did not prompt formal action.
