Eric Lachanski, a representative of the City of Altoona, said the Altoona Redevelopment Authority acquired 516 East Atlantic Avenue "via eminent domain" after the city could not locate heirs to the property. "This is a property that the redevelopment authority of Altoona acquired via eminent domain," he said.
Lachanski told viewers the house had been vacant for six years and that staff searched extensively for heirs before taking the property. He said the acquisition was intended to "try and save" the building and return it to productive use in the residential neighborhood off Pleasant Valley Boulevard. The city plans to solicit proposals for rehabilitation and sale as a single-family home in the coming weeks.
