Council hears project scope and cost differences for BHS viewing plaza

The Burrillville High School Field Viewing Plaza project includes a 600-square-foot press box and concession building behind the stands, accessible restrooms, roughly 6,000 square feet of concrete plaza and seven handicapped parking spaces, DPW Director Jeffrey McCormick said during the Nov. 5 special meeting.
McCormick said the town received three bids and explained some line-item differences. When a council member asked why utility connection costs varied widely among bids — citing figures of roughly $95,000, $1,201,000 and $22,000 — McCormick said the low bidder already had equipment on-site and was performing utility work, which accounted for the discrepancy. He also said the town removed a thicker concrete slab and switched roofing choices to metal to save money.
"I think he's already doing utility work. He's already on-site," McCormick said in response to the question about the low utility bid. The council heard that eliminating the thickened slab and sticking with the metal roof were cost-saving choices to keep the project within the low-bid budget.
