Crescent View West seeks to move Sunnyside campus, cites safety concerns and added classrooms

The Fresno County Board of Education heard a public hearing on a material revision filed by Crescent View West seeking to relocate its Sunnyside campus from 5659 East Kings Canyon Road to 4971 East Cesar Chavez Boulevard in the Plaza De King shopping center.

Area superintendent Gogany Piel presented the petition and said the current site (6,750 square feet) has daily safety concerns stemming from unhoused individuals who congregate in the parking lot. Piel said the proposed combined space of 8,697 square feet will expand instructional areas, create offices for counselors and psychologists, and allow dedicated classrooms for CTE, STEM and targeted interventions.

Piel said the board will receive a staff report ahead of the July county-board meeting and that the petition includes an updated community impact statement and a three-year budget projection showing a positive financial outlook. When a board member asked whether renovations could be finished before the fall term, Piel responded the timeline was “about 6 to 8 months.”

The petitioner said the new site includes security upgrades, a surveillance system and metal detectors and noted proximity to a United Way service center in the same shopping center as an additional family resource. No final action was taken at the hearing; staff will prepare a recommendation for a future meeting.

The presentation and questions were held under the board’s public-hearing rules; the board did not respond to testimony during the hearing itself.
