The Nemaha County Planning Commission heard public input on proposed changes to the county Comprehensive Plan at its June 25 meeting in Auburn. Chris Meeks of Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) told the commission he was following up on a May letter with "suggested bullet point changes" to the plan; the commission said it would consider OPPD's updates during future revisions.
Members of the public asked the commission to weigh proximity protections and landowner choice. Dave Piper urged that setback standards for projects be "comparable to those given to wildlife areas," framing the request as a protection for nearby homes. Sandra Armknecht advocated "an all above approach to energy production" and emphasized county landowners' freedom to choose how their land is used. Commissioners did not make a formal decision; staff indicated the input will be considered as the Comprehensive Plan and Article X (Renewable Energy) are edited.
The commission plans to continue review of Article X on Renewable Energy at the July meeting and to take the public and utility comments into account during zoning and regulatory drafting.
