Architects propose removing some trees and a limestone tower on courthouse grounds; county to weigh monuments' historical ties

Judge Miller and project architects reviewed proposed site drawings that show a reduction in vegetation in the northwest and northeast quadrants and potential removal of a small limestone tower that holds the fire bell. The judge said the semicircular monument on the northeast quadrant that contains names tied to county residents and military service "is part of the county history," and he does not anticipate it being a point of contention with the THC.

Alexis urged commissioners to submit concerns and asked the court to provide comments on the proposed drawings and the historical section of the master plan. She cautioned that the THC prefers monuments on courthouse squares be directly tied to county history; if a monument is not county‑related, the THC may recommend relocation and it could affect grant eligibility. "They're looking for things that are connected to the county," Alexis said, urging early review if the court wants future THC funding.

Commissioners also discussed low‑profile exterior lighting options and relocating benches to defined pathways. The court asked staff to circulate photographic evidence of historic chimneys and other features so commissioners can compare the proposed restoration with earlier appearances prior to final submission.
