The board also recognized Kimberly “Kim” Lyon, a sophomore leadership student and class president at Douglas High School, for organizing a canned‑food drive that engaged more than 200 local businesses and secured a $1,000 donation from Willie Cafe to support the Winston Food Bank. A presenter said Kim’s efforts produced two vanloads of food for the food bank and inspired other students to lead community projects.
Looking Glass Elementary’s first‑grade nominee Lola Lear was lauded for perseverance, empathy and consistent effort in class; a teacher’s letter was read on her behalf because the teacher was ill. The board closed the recognition section with similar comments about Adelaide, noting her creativity, grit and readiness to seek feedback and improve.
The awards portion concluded with applause and photos; presenters emphasized character traits such as responsibility, respect and community service as consistent district priorities.
