Surry County African American Heritage Society asks to use vacant courthouse building for meetings

Judy Little, representing the Surry County African American Heritage Society, told the board the society has been active since about 2003 and asked to occupy one of the vacant courthouse‑grounds buildings, with a preference for the old jailhouse as a meeting and program space.
Little said the society currently meets at the Park and Rec building and would appreciate the board's assistance in determining a suitable building and next steps. Chairman Elliott and county staff said they have the request on staff and would look into the buildings to identify an appropriate option.
Little thanked the board and emphasized the society's interest in preserving county history and providing a regular meeting place.
