Chewelah Civil Service Commission declines to reconsider David Watts termination

The Chewelah Civil Service Commission voted 2–1 on May 7 to reject a petition to reconsider its earlier decision on the termination appeal of David Watts.
Commissioner Jim Earle moved to reconsider the Commission’s decision, saying he supported review "in consideration of the totality of information presented to the Commission, including information provided prior to the public hearing held on 2/25/2026 which was not addressed during the hearing." That motion received no second and therefore failed. Commissioner Carra Nupp then moved "not to reconsider the Commission’s decision regarding the termination appeal of David Watts," a motion seconded by Commissioner Cindy Wilmoth and approved by a 2–1 vote (Nupp and Wilmoth in favor; Earle opposed). Attorney Michael Waters stated, "this was the final decision of the Civil Service Commission in the matter of the termination appeal of David Watts."
The commission also announced as a finding of law that Mayor Knauss — not City Administrator Wallace, as had been suggested during the February 25 public hearing — made the original termination decision regarding David Watts. The meeting was convened at 3:02 p.m. and adjourned at 3:26 p.m.
