Council approves two crosswalk safety projects, including state-funded pedestrian beacon

Council approved two distinct pedestrian-safety measures during the April 14 meeting. City staff (speaker 11) requested authorization to contract for installation of two rapid flashing yellow crossing lights (cost $25,700 plus a 25% contingency) and described a separate state-funded pedestrian hybrid beacon for Simpson Parkway (crossing 904) that the state will install while the city will maintain it over its life.
"The cost being 25,700 and we're asking for 25% contingencies for unknowns on that," the staff presenter said, describing the contract with OK Electric for installation. On the Simpson Parkway hybrid beacon, the staff member said the state will pay for installation but asked the city to accept maintenance responsibilities after construction. Council moved and passed Resolutions F485 and F487 to advance both projects.
City officials said these installations complement the Safe Routes to School grant work and are intended to make busy corridors safer for pedestrians and students.
