A city staff presenter (speaker 11) asked the council for authorization to submit a Department of Transportation Safe Routes to School grant requesting $820,000 to fill sidewalk gaps near Nolan Brown, Annie Place and North 5th, add rapid flashing crossing devices near the high and middle schools, and expand a bike lane to tie into an Elm Street project.
"We're asking for $820,000 to complete this project. And this is 100% funding," the staff member said. Council members discussed the project in Public Works and agreed it was appropriate; the council approved Resolution F484 to allow submission of the grant application.
The presentation emphasized that, if funded, the project would require no city match and would include rapid-flash devices and expanded bike lane connections intended to improve school-area pedestrian and bicycle safety.
