Amy Erickson met with the Commission to request a property tax refund or credit of $3,103.22, saying paperwork for owner-occupied status had not been processed correctly, causing overpayment over three years.
Erickson outlined the timeline: she said Troy Erickson removed her name from one residence on Jan. 8, 2021, she applied for owner-occupied status on Jan. 22, 2021, and she received a denial letter Jan. 26, 2021; she said she does not remember receiving that denial. Dir. of Equalization Cori Kaufmann explained the office’s process, noting deed transfers and processing timelines. Erickson said, “I didn’t catch it because I didn’t know how to read the assessment notice and assumed I had OO status.”
Commissioners were split: Commissioner Chuck Mehlbrech said he saw no problem with refunding the county share; Commissioner Dean Koch said the appeal process begins with assessment notices in March and that the request was too late. Koch asked Auditor Geralyn Sherman to check with the Department of Legislative Audit and bring information to the Sept. 24 meeting for further action.
The board took no immediate refund action at the Sept. 5 meeting but directed follow-up to determine whether a refund or other remedy was administratively allowed.
