Council accepts $219,230 state grant to support Cheney therapeutic court

The Cheney City Council voted to accept a $219,230.88 Washington State Therapeutic Court grant from the Administrative Office of the Courts to support operations of the city’s therapeutic court.
Cody Mekas, the therapeutic court coordinator, told the council the award will help pay for treatment services, bus passes and other supports intended to help eligible defendants with substance-use and mental-health needs stay engaged in treatment and resolve their court matters. "This allows us to assist defendants who are eligible, who are suffering with substance use, mental health concerns, and other needs," Mekas said.
The therapeutic-court case manager told the council the program saves money and has important personal outcomes for participants, noting graduates who have sustained sobriety. The council moved, seconded and approved Resolution F-503 to accept the grant; the motion carried and the resolution passed. The grant will support ongoing program operations while staff continue work to measure participant outcomes and report to the council.
