The Isleton City Council voted to declare two pieces of fire equipment surplus and directed staff to pursue sale options intended to maximize cash recovery while protecting emergency response.
Staff said Engine 393 (a type 1 engine) is $46,000 past due on a payment and carries more than $300,000 in outstanding principal; they recommended declaring it surplus and marketing it to public agencies or wholesalers. "Before we do that, we have to get rid of this," a staff presenter said, explaining that proceeds will be applied where the city most needs cash. Council moved and approved the resolution to declare Engine 393 surplus.
The council also considered a newer duty chief unit (Unit 9300). Discussion explored whether prior managers had authorized purchases without adequate council oversight and whether proceeds from earlier surplus sales were fully documented. Staff reported transaction records show two payments for the purchase were made from the general fund. Council approved declaring Unit 9300 surplus as well.
Councilors and residents asked staff to consider how equipment sales could affect the city's ISO rating and homeowners' insurance premiums; the fire chief said the city currently holds an ISO rating of 4 and urged staff to confirm that sales would not harm that rating.
Motion and outcome: both surplus resolutions were moved, seconded and approved by roll call during the meeting. Staff said they will attempt to sell to another public agency to avoid the competitive-bid process where allowed and to pursue the best possible recovery.
