Parks staff report: signage, irrigation overhaul and ice-rink chiller planning underway

Staff updated the committee on CIP/budget timing, new park signs, a proposed solar-powered irrigation overhaul at Bird Park, planning for an ice-rink chiller replacement with a temporary chiller in place, pickleball court completion and other maintenance projects.
Parks staff reminded the committee that CIP and budget text are due Friday and said items not at the CIP dollar level will be placed into the operational budget. Staff reviewed completed and upcoming capital work: North Meadowcroft punch-out is finished, final footers were poured for a racket-center ID sign expected to be installed the following day, and a second round of park signs is planned for fall.
On irrigation, staff proposed replacing the Bird Park system with a solar-powered controller and deep-cycle batteries to centralize controls and reduce labor-intensive maintenance. "They require tons of labor... this would just be a replacement with a solar powered system with deep cell batteries," the staff member said.
David (parks operations) reported summer programs are running, the pool and golf course are busy, planning for the ice-rink chiller replacement has begun and a temporary chiller will be used during the project, and pickleball courts and racket-center fencing work are complete or underway. He also noted a sign to name the rink in honor of Frank Gill has been ordered.
