Mount Lebanon committee advances e‑bike and scooter rules, plans joint education campaign

The Parks Advisory Committee discussed an ordinance the commission recently advanced to strengthen rules for e-bikes and similar motorized devices in parks and on municipal turf. Committee members said incidents of kids riding on turf and on the golf course prompted the measure; the ordinance was introduced and will require a period of public input and a hearing before adoption.

“We advanced an ordinance to put stricter regulations on ebikes or the whole host of different the, electric… scooters, everything, in parks,” a committee member said, explaining police involvement in prior incidents. Members stressed that existing park rules are sometimes ambiguous and agreed the new ordinance should be explicit about turf, golf course and parklet restrictions to aid enforcement.

Several members urged a joint education campaign with the school district and police, including classroom outreach at the start of the school year and clear social-media materials that list the rules in plain language so parents and students understand where wheeled devices may be ridden. One member asked that a written campaign be prepared and shared widely across school and community groups.
