Mapleton SD 32 board reviews mission, debates wording and scope

Chair (S2) opened the retreat noting the plan to review the board mission, vision and working agreements for the year. The chair read the mission aloud as drafted: “a supportive and safe learning environment where all students are encouraged and empowered to reach their educational and personal potential.”
Board members discussed whether the language should say the board "strives" or assert stronger claims about always doing what is best for students. One board member (S1) said, “we strive to do what's best because we couldn't possibly be doing what's best,” reflecting a preference for modest language that acknowledges legal and operational limits. Members also debated whether the item should be titled the district mission or the board mission and proposed clarifying the header so readers understand whether statements apply at the district or board level.
The group agreed to keep overlapping sentences if they appear both at board and district levels, but asked staff to clearly label the document. The board asked the superintendent/staff to circulate a marked-up draft with options for verb choices and placement (district vs. board), so the body can vote or affirm the final text at a later meeting.
Next steps: staff will circulate a revised mission/vision draft that labels board vs. district language and includes alternative verb choices for the board to consider at a future meeting.
