Board member David Perry, who said he drafted the resolution, told colleagues it was meant to address how the district's student and staff data are stored and whether "data [is] commingled with other school districts' data in a way that is risky." "I wrote the thing," Perry said during the agenda-review discussion, arguing the board should study the resolution before renewing related subscriptions.
Several board members noted timing limits: some contracts must be approved to avoid expiration and take effect immediately, while the data-protection policy could be effective at a future date. Policy chair Adam and staff agreed the item merits a fuller discussion next week, and members set a 20-minute slot to consider the resolution and related materials from NCDPI and the School Board Association.
The board approved the procedural motion to move new business before consensus on a roll call vote of 6-0. Next steps include a staff briefing and a scheduled policy discussion at the board's next meeting.
