District recommends TCI for 6th grade, McGraw Hill for 7–8 and Cengage for AP Human Geography in first read

Andy Byerly, the district’s secondary teaching and learning TOSA, presented a first read on recommended secondary social‑science instructional materials after a two‑year pilot and teacher rubric process. For grade 6 staff recommended Teachers Curriculum Institute's History Alive (TCI); for grades 7–8 they recommended McGraw Hill; and for AP Human Geography they recommended the Cengage National Geographic Learning program. Byerly said the work started last spring and that the state adopted revised standards in 2024, which included expanded civics and tribal history requirements and the influence of Senate Bill 3 on course offerings.
Teachers who piloted the materials shared classroom examples including inquiry‑based projects and hands‑on units (Japanese tea ceremony, app design for economics, and a student Channel 7 project on the double‑V campaign). Byerly said pilot rubrics tied to K‑12 criteria produced a tie in some grades and the recommended approach balances continuity (TCI elementary/middle continuity) with McGraw Hill's strengths in upper middle grades. The district will publish preview links and host additional community sessions before bringing final recommendations to the board in June.
