Enrollment dips offset by local growth; district eyes Sherwood East housing for future students

Officials told the budget committee that enrollment — the district’s primary funding driver — is down modestly this year but that local housing developments and cohort effects are supporting growth in some grades.
"Enrollment this year is tracking actually pretty well. We're tracking it about 30 below as of today between last year and this year," the CFO said. He highlighted cohort shifts: a senior class of 407 poised against 232–234 new kindergarteners, creating a natural decline in the short term, but several middle grades were larger than the cohorts ahead of them.
Superintendent Eric Dowell and others pointed to local development as a potential source of students. The CFO said the sale of a sewer easement to Clean Water Services and forthcoming infrastructure could support roughly 400 homes along Brooklyn, plus undetermined timing for a larger Sherwood West development. "Once that sewer line is complete, there'll be more development occurring along Brooklyn," he said.
Committee members cautioned that housing timing makes staffing decisions difficult; one member noted unpredictable local development "has made it very hard to distinguish when you need to add an elementary teacher or not." The district said it will continue monitoring enrollment and work with builders and realtors to assess incoming families.
