Sherwood School District 88J’s finance team reported a stronger-than-expected budget outlook at the April 13 budget committee update, with the general fund projected to increase by "over $1,000,000" this year and reserves rising toward policy targets.
"We're in a pretty good position," the district CFO said, noting the local option levy and conservative forecasting contributed to a healthier balance. The presentation showed ending fund balances that have moved from about $2.43 million (22-23) to $3.325 million and a projected roughly $4.0 million in the coming year, putting the district ahead of its informal goal to reach 5% reserves.
Committee members discussed how those reserves could be used for capital needs or to smooth future staffing changes. Gary (CFO) emphasized the choices ahead: "We need to make some decisions about how aggressively to move towards that and how to serve the needs of kids now and what makes most sense to do with that." He also said the board policy allows a glidepath up to 8% by 28-29.
Looking toward next fiscal year, the district plans approximately $1,000,000 in reductions, the CFO said, aiming to take reductions "largely through attrition" and non-staff savings first. The committee was reminded that the May 11 meeting is when the formal budget will be presented and a vote scheduled.
