Voucher and independent charter costs to exceed $1 million, Clark says; expense remains in levy

Matt Clark explained how voucher and independent charter program costs affect the district's property tax levy even though the district does not retain or spend those dollars. "Instead, how it works is the state of Wisconsin deducts those funds from our state aid or equalization aid and sends those funds, directly to participating private schools and independent charter schools," Clark said.
Clark said the district serves as an intermediary in accounting for those costs and noted that "for the 1st time ever, the costs of these programs are projected to exceed $1,000,000," a trend he said the district and other Wisconsin districts are monitoring because it increases the levy despite the district not controlling the payments. He described the item as informational and built into the budget but emphasized it affects overall levy totals.
