Sun Prairie Area School District presents balanced preliminary 2026-27 budget with $99.6M levy projection

Matt Clark, director of business and finance for the Sun Prairie Area School District, presented the preliminary 2026-27 budget at the public hearing and said the district is putting forward a balanced proposal for board consideration. "I am presenting a balanced budget to the school board and the community, which is always great news," Clark said.
Clark said the proposed budget reflects multiple moving parts: enrollment assumptions, state equalization aid estimates, referendum allocations and federal funding shifts. Under current assumptions the district's projected total school-based levy is approximately $99,600,000 and the projected mill rate is $10.41. He emphasized both numbers are projections and dependent on final state aid figures and equalized property values later in the fall.
The presentation noted key state timelines that affect the budget: DPI's first aid estimate released July 1, equalized property values set by the Department of Revenue on Oct. 1 and final state aid on Oct. 15. Clark said detailed revenue and expenditure documents will be posted on Diligent and available in the boardroom for public review during the July 27 board meeting.
The hearing is part of the board's public-review process ahead of formal adoption scheduled for Oct. 26. Clark invited questions from the community and staff as the budget process continues.
