Disaster recovery jobs program: 69 enrolled, funds may be exhausted in months

Program staff updated the board on the disaster-recovery jobs program tied to tornado recovery work.
"We have 69 people working. We have about 6 people in process to start working hopefully in the next couple of weeks, and that will leave us with only about 7 spots left," the program manager said. She added staff expect to exhaust the work-experience dollars "in about 3 to 4 months once we get the total of 81 people working," and said they will ask the state for additional funds so participants can work longer than the few months current funding allows.
Staff also described employer success stories from the program—participants referred to worksites where employers have already asked to hire some participants full time after the work-experience period—and said the Department of Labor will conduct worksite checks in September. Board members urged staff to collect photos and success-story material to strengthen future grant requests.
