Local farmer urges attention to farm finances and wells going dry in Whiteford Township

Ned Berkey of Ida addressed the board with a wide-ranging update on Monroe County agriculture and water issues.
Berkey noted national and regional farm economic pressures — including a reported 46% increase in farm bankruptcies last year and projections that farm income will fall — and described how lenders manage shortfalls through loan restructuring. He flagged fertilizer supply risks connected to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and cited Purdue University and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange surveys on farmer sentiment. Berkey also provided county-specific USDA acreage numbers and a calculation of potential bridge-payment totals to farmers under a per-acre payment scenario.
On local environmental concerns, Berkey told the board that wells in Whiteford Township are going dry and referenced US Geological Survey test wells and a historical water-use survey he said estimated Monroe County use at about 30 million gallons per day (with significant withdrawals by quarries and agriculture). “One hot potato locally at the moment though is, Whiteford Township, because the wells are going dry,” Berkey said. He urged attention to both short- and long-term responses and noted an upcoming local meeting on the issue.
