County staff: backup power unit, radio upgrades and K‑State Mesonet station moving forward

County staff updated the commission that the previously approved backup power vendor is building the county’s unit; staff estimated two to three weeks to build and test before shipment in the second week of August. Installation timing will be coordinated with schools, libraries, the hospital and other partners so the cutover does not disrupt critical services.
Staff also said the state will provide a communications‑on‑wheels (CAL) mobile radio unit to maintain radio communications during the equipment cutover. Separately, K‑State Research and Extension has requested permission to place a Mesonet weather station at the county airport; staff said FAA approval for the proposed location has been obtained and that K‑State will maintain the station while the county provides the site.
