Shareen, a senior at Sumner Academy, described how participation in the IB Diploma Programme and a KCKPS internship with Vibrant Health confirmed and shaped her interest in public health. "I spotlighted art accessibility in KCKPS," she said, describing work that led to a community center newspaper and hands-on research into social determinants of health in Kansas City, Kansas.
Shareen credited the IB curriculum at Sumner with helping her achieve a competitive ACT score, GPA and class rank, and said the combination of rigorous classes and internships helped her decide to pursue public health on a pre-med track at Washington University in St. Louis. She also described earlier experiences such as speech and debate and KCKCC's Saturday Academy that helped her narrow her career focus. Stubblefield said the district will continue bringing student voices like Shareen's to future podcasts and alumni spotlights.
