Commissioners unanimously approve annexation of 43 acres along Highway 68

The Sweetwater mayor and board of commissioners voted to annex territory along Highway 68 after brief discussion of recreational uses and design funding. The board adopted a resolution to annex the property; the presiding official said the motion carried after members indicated assent.

City Administrator (speaker identified as City Administrator) described possible uses for the 43-acre parcel, saying the city has applied for a competitive planning grant “specifically for parks and recreation services to, like, hire a parks and recreation specialized engineer to look at it and say this is how we could lay it out.” Commissioners mentioned options ranging from two to four fields and associated parking, and staff noted a portion of the site is heavily wooded and that proposed field layouts were sized for scale. The administrator also reported the property owner submitted the annexation contingent on the city purchasing the parcel.

Commission discussion covered topography and buildability: a staff member reported that the site's grade changes less than 8 percent across corners, calling that favorable for field layouts. Council members requested staff provide planning drawings at the next meeting; one commissioner offered to include concept models in the board packet. The board approved the resolution by voice vote with no recorded nays.

Next steps identified in the workshop included pursuing the planning grant to produce a design concept and returning to the board with more detailed site plans and cost estimates before making final use or split decisions.
