Lake Patrol stresses life-jacket rules and storm planning for boaters

David Ferguson, Lake Patrol Division, told attendees that life jackets save lives and that many drownings could have been avoided if victims had been wearing one. “Life jackets are critical,” he said, adding a reminder that “Kids 13 and under, they have to have 1 on when you're underway.”
Beyond life jackets, Ferguson advised that adults ensure a life jacket is available for each person on board, check gasoline levels so they do not run out while on the water, carry a fire extinguisher and perform vessel safety inspections before leaving the dock. He also recommended checking weather forecasts to avoid thunderstorms and returning to shore with time to spare before storms arrive.
