Secretary-General visits Cyprus, meets community leaders and honors fallen peacekeepers

Farhan said the secretary-general met separately with Nikos Khristoulidis, leader of the Greek Cypriot community, and Tufan Erhman, leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, and that ‘‘he laid a wreath at the permanent monument dedicated to the service and sacrifice of all the peacekeepers who have served on the island since 1964.’’ The spokesperson said the monument honors the memory of 187 peacekeepers from 11 countries who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Farhan added the secretary-general visited the committee on missing persons and its anthropological laboratory and held meetings with co-chairs of technical committees and civil society representatives. ‘‘This is a visit of solidarity with the people of Cyprus,’’ Farhan said, summarizing the secretary-general's remarks.
The spokesperson said the secretary-general will continue engagements in Cyprus the following day and planned a joint dinner with the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders. The briefing did not include further details on outcomes from the meetings or any immediate changes to the peace process timetable.
