A resident identified as April told the Council that items left at her sister’s grave had been removed or broken since Cook Family Park opened and said a recent incident chipped a headstone. "There is no separation between the park and the cemetery," April said, and she asked the Council to consider installing a fence and increasing police presence after school hours.
City Administrator Scott Darrington acknowledged vandalism concerns at the cemetery and said staff will meet with Parks Director Deon Giles and Police Chief Keldon Brown to explore prevention measures, including reviewing video surveillance. Darrington also said a cemetery expansion to the west makes a permanent fence impractical, so staff will look at other options and report back to Council.
Council Member Cyd LeMone said vandalism has occurred in the new section and supported exploring barriers to deter entry. Chief Brown told the Council he will provide extra patrols for the area. The City did not commit to a specific remedy at the meeting but directed staff to research options and present recommendations at a future Council meeting.
