County adopts ordinance codifying traffic controls, updates speed and stop signs tied to Sunnyside Overpass

The Elkhart County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved an ordinance July 27 to codify existing traffic-control rules into the county code and make specific changes to speed limits and intersection controls.
County attorney Steve Olson told commissioners the ordinance ‘‘is adopting a series of previous ordinances’’ into code so residents can more easily find rules. Kyle Wagner of the Highway Department reviewed the specific modifications, including a segment where the limit changes from 45 to 50 mph and multiple stop-sign removals and additions caused by the Sunnyside Overpass project. Wagner said some intersections are now controlled by traffic signals rather than stop signs and that a yield sign had been missed during construction and is now being added.
The changes also include corrected descriptions for County Road 19 and updates where annexation has altered intersections. Commissioners moved and approved the ordinance without recorded dissent.
The measure is procedural in part — bringing prior local rules into the codified county code — but contains discrete traffic-control updates the Highway Department says are necessary due to recent construction and annexation.
