Town moving to 2024 codes; wildfire-resiliency changes include historic-preservation exemption

Staff told the board the town is moving from the 2021 code to updated 2024 codes this summer and that new requirements will affect exterior materials: decking will need to be made from noncombustible or fire-treated material and siding will need to be fire compliant. "So that's decking, handrails, all of that. You can't have a redwood deck anymore," a staff member said, describing the changes as primarily targeted at new construction and exterior remodels.
Boland emphasized that staff included an exemption for historic preservation consistent with state law so landmarked or contributing structures in the historic downtown can be treated flexibly, while staff will still consider fire-safe materials where possible. The board discussed how those changes might affect the board’s manual and landmarked properties and asked staff to return with mapping and code-application details.
