Council adopts public procedures for filling midterm council vacancy; staff to post candidate materials

The City Council adopted Resolution 2026-02 on Jan. 6 to codify procedures for filling an upcoming midterm City Council vacancy in a manner consistent with updated state law. City Attorney Christine Petersen explained the policy requires a public question-and-answer period during the appointment meeting, a secret-ballot vote, and that the vacancy be filled within 30 days of the Jan. 6 meeting.
Mayor Jensen and council members discussed transparency measures and agreed candidates would be encouraged to submit a three-minute or shorter video and typed answers to three council-selected questions. Applications will be available on Jan. 7 and must be hand-delivered to City Hall by Jan. 21. Candidate responses and videos will be posted on the City website after the application period has closed, and the appointment meeting is scheduled for Jan. 27 at 6 p.m.
