The City Council voted to add Use 3424 (metal working machinery and equipment) to permitted uses in the General Commercial (C-G) zone on Jan. 6, but only with qualifying provisions intended to limit impacts on neighboring commercial and residential uses.
Community Development Director Daniel Cardenas explained the Planning Commission’s recommendation and the qualifying provisions: a storefront requirement, a 3,500-square-foot cap on manufacturing area, and an amperage limit of 400 amps per unit to restrict heavy industrial operations. Applicant Brian Fruit said the tenant would house CNC machines in enclosed units and use a storefront showroom. "These types of parts are typically manufactured in Asia, but the federal government is encouraging manufacturing in the United States," Fruit said. Public commenters raised concerns about noise and truck traffic; staff and commissioners said the restrictions aim to mitigate those concerns.
