Consultants outline Broadway District $13 million streetscape plan, schedule community design work

City consultants presented a multi-disciplinary update on the Broadway District renovation, describing a project that will combine infrastructure repairs, streetscape beautification and a district branding program.
Luke Schmidt, the project manager from Kimley Horn, told council the project combines engineering and landscape architecture so that streets, sidewalks and storefront improvements can be delivered together rather than staged separately. "This is a marriage of both engineering and landscape architecture improvements," he said, adding that the team is focusing on constructability to limit disruption during construction.
Schmidt outlined the work to date: an inventory of subsurface utilities, an ADA assessment of sidewalks (identifying compliant and noncompliant segments), a parking-space count and a condition survey of alleys and parking lots. He said the team received about 75 survey responses, 10 map comments and more than 200 unique visitors to the project website during the initial engagement window.
The presentation also covered a brand-development effort to create a coherent identity for the Broadway District that will be rolled into the streetscape design. Schmidt said the next steps are to finalize branding, prepare cross sections and character images, and complete preliminary engineering over the next four to six months to produce a budget for implementation.
The council did not take an action to award construction at the meeting; staff said the design work will produce the project priorities and an implementation budget for future council consideration.
